LAND ROVER’S PIONEERING CLEARSIGHT GROUND VIEW

The new Range Rover Evoque features a world first – Ground View Technology which effectively makes the bonnet invisible.

The system uses forward facing cameras in each door mirror and on the front grille to create a virtual 180-degree view of the road ahead. Not only will this be a huge help in challenging off-road environments, but it will also make life easier when negotiating tight city streets and cramped car parks.

The technology won an the innovation award at the Autocar Awards 2019 – ” it’s a piece of technology that managed to catch our attention even in this era of rapidly changing and increasingly astounding automotive technological achievements.”

In addition the new Evoque also features ClearSight Rear View Mirror, a high-definition video screen that revolutionises rear-view mirror visibility from the driver’s seat.

SOLIHULL VOLUNTEERS GROW FRESH FRUIT AND VEG TO HELP THE LOCAL COMMUNITY

The opening of the new allotment is the latest community project supported by the Lode Lane factory, which aims to provide fresh produce for people in need of food who live in the Solihull and Birmingham area.

The team is working alongside Gro-Organic, who create green spaces to provide social and economic opportunities for some of the most disadvantaged people in the region, to help make a real difference in the community.

A team of volunteers overhauled the plot last winter, by clearing overgrowth, installing a polytunnel and raised beds in preparation for its first full year harvest.

The allotment will grow a range of fruit and vegetables including runner beans and raspberries, with the produce accompanying advice and recipes in seasonal food boxes. These will be distributed through a number of food banks, including – the Real Junk Food Project, Free Food Friday and the Incredible Edible Network.

There is also a hand-built earth oven at the allotment, where beneficiaries can enjoy the produce as soon as it is picked.

Dave Owen, Solihull’s Operations Director, said he was saddened to read that more than 100,000 children in Birmingham live in food poverty, adding:

“When the opportunity came to expand our partnership with Gro-Organic and create a community allotment, I knew the whole team would want to support it.

“This project provides an ideal opportunity to support the education, health and wellbeing of our workforce, while providing enough fresh, seasonal produce for 400 meals in its first year.”

This new allotment will also bring a wealth of wellbeing and education opportunities with it. A new work experience programme call ‘Moat-ivation’, aimed at 16 to 24-year-olds, will help improve their employability prospects and allow participants to gain a qualification in horticulture and landscaping.

ON THE MONEY: EARN AS YOU DRIVE WITH JAGUAR LAND ROVER

Using ‘Smart Wallet’ technology, owners earn credits by enabling their cars to automatically report useful road condition data such as traffic congestion or potholes to navigation providers or local authorities. Drivers could then redeem these for rewards such as coffee, or conveniently use them to automatically pay tolls, parking fees and for smart charging electric vehicles. ‘Smart Wallet’ removes the need for drivers to hunt for loose change or sign up to multiple accounts to pay for a variety of everyday services.

‘Smart Wallet’ uses the latest cryptocurrency technology and Jaguar Land Rover has partnered with the IOTA Foundation to harness ‘distributed ledger’ technologies to make and receive these payments.

The advanced connected technology is being trialled at the new Jaguar Land Rover software engineering base in Shannon, Republic of Ireland, where engineers have already equipped several vehicles, including the Jaguar F-PACE and Range Rover Velar, with ‘Smart Wallet’ functionality.

“The connected car technologies we are developing will be transformative and truly turn your Jaguar or Land Rover into a third space, in addition to your home or office. In the future an autonomous car could drive itself to a charging station, recharge and pay, while its owner could choose to participate in the sharing economy – earning rewards from sharing useful data such as warning other cars of traffic jams.” Russell Vickers, Jaguar Land Rover Software Architect

Software in the West of Ireland

Why do you like it here at the Ireland software hub?

I like it here because it’s new, there is a sense of excitement. Every month we have new people starting and they’re all bringing different experiences. Everyone is excited to get projects off the ground and start something from scratch. It’s not something that many software engineers get to do in their careers. Here, everyone has the freedom to figure out where they fit into the software stack, or even software at Jaguar Land Rover which is unusual to have.

The ethos and attitude here is one of friendship, everyone is welcoming. There is a sense that if you have any questions you could ask anyone and if they can they will, if they can’t they’ll point you in the direction of someone who can.

Working in a cutting edge area like autonomous driving, things that I would never have thought of before don’t seem impossible, a world where cars are shared or self-driving is perfectly feasible and will definitely happen. Things like your accounts, logins or payments being enabled in car doesn’t seem outrageous.

What advice would you give to someone looking to join Jaguar Land Rover in the West of Ireland?

I would say be yourself, if you’re natural and genuine you’ll leave a better impression than someone who’s trying to be smarter or more experienced than they are.

Rehearse your CV, make sure you can talk about what you’ve written down.

What advice would you give to someone starting a career in software engineering?

Keep your GitHub up to date, if you can show that you’ve thought about code that’ll be relevant.

Also, because technology and the tools we use are changing so quickly keep on top of online courses such as Udacity. Some of them may not give qualifications but they show just how interested you are.
