We live and breathe Diversity and Inclusion everyday

Lead Commodity Engineer Dr Nancy Liu loves science. Since the age of 3, her family knew that she was good at maths and loved experimenting with things.

Over the years, Nancy has earned her professional credentials from various different organisations and universities. She has a PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the University of Nottingham.

Nancy was also featured in dSPACE magazine, providing user feedback on dSPACE simulators on behalf of Jaguar Land Rover Powertrain.

Q: What position did you start in and what is your position now? Please describe your current responsibilities.

‘As a lead engineer, I am responsible for planning and building the test rigs. Essentially, I write scripts to test the BECM (Battery Energy Control Module) software to ensure they all meet the JLR standards.

On a daily basis I carry out rigorous manual and automation testing in our laboratory. I work in collaboration with our commodity owners and managers to ensure we deliver the battery management system with the highest quality, on time.’

Q: Are you involved in any other projects / networks? If so, please describe what they are and what your contributions are.

‘I previously supported our Electrical Integration team to update software for over 200 vehicles in China. We worked closely with the British manufacturing technicians and the Chinese retailers / warehouse employees.

In addition to the engineering aspect of my job, I also helped building relationships. I removed certain ambiguity when discussing complex projects; I knocked down language barriers by providing face-to-face professional interpretations, offering a greater context with my Chinese language skills and cultural background.

I previously led the powertrain HIL (hardware-in-the-loop) lab, assembling the team of 7 engineers from scratch. We did a thorough upgrade of all the hardware and software in the lab. The HIL facilities are still in use by many of our Jaguar Land Rover colleagues today and I am very proud of this achievement.’

Q: What do you like about working in Jaguar Land Rover?

‘I love science and engineering. Jaguar Land Rover provided me with this fantastic opportunity which allows me to combine the knowledge I have gained from years of studying and researching, with the practical aspect – I play with the latest software and cutting edge equipment daily. I work with a bunch of knowledgeable and enthusiastic people. What’s not to like?’

Q: What are your career aspirations? Do you feel that you get the necessary support from your management / department to help achieve your learning & development goal?

‘I love my job, hardware-in-the-loop in particular. My manager is also very supportive, we often have open discussions about the technical issues as well as my personal development opportunities. I feel encouraged, empowered and supported to achieve more.’

Q: Describe your team / department, and what makes it stand out from our competition?

‘The Battery Management Control System team consists of employees from 8 different countries. We live and breathe Diversity and Inclusion everyday. I am the only female in my team, and we are all being treated equally. Everyone’s voice and opinions matter.’

Q: Tell us 3 interesting facts about yourself.

‘I am not all science and numbers, I also like art – I often paint in my spare time to relax and clear my mind; I am a keen traveller, my dream is to travel around the world one day.’

Q: What hints and tips can you share with the potential candidates who are going through the application / interview process?

‘Have the relevant background knowledge and be confident in your answers.’

Q: What position did you start in and what is your position now? Please describe your current responsibilities.

I was very lucky to have done many placements in various areas during my two-year graduate programme, it enabled me to explore and better understand our business. My home team was responsible for the Infotainment systems and I supported the Software Over the Air (SOTA) project during my time there; I was also part of the Product Launch team that built the New Range Rover. In addition, I gained invaluable experiences in both Manchester DDC (Digital Delivery Centre) and Shannon office in Ireland during my rotation.

I am currently a Site Reliability Engineer. My responsibilities include working with Google Cloud Platform provider to host Jaguar Land Rover in-house apps and closely managing each release to ensure there is no delay. My experiences and knowledge also enabled me to identify improvement opportunities, as well as recommending / developing solutions to drive business excellence. I worked on automating a process that rotates Vault Access Tokens in GitLab overnight. These tokens are used to access the Vault where we store sensitive information. As a result, the automation delivered tangible business benefits by removing manual intervention and ensuring better security.

Q: Are you involved in any other projects / networks? If so, please describe what they are and what your contributions are.

I am currently working on the Pivotal project which predominantly focuses on developing a customer-facing subscription app for new vehicle sales. The project allows our customers to lease Jaguar Land Rover vehicles for a minimum of 6 months period, at a fixed cost. As a part of the subscription, customers also have the opportunity to change to a new vehicle every 6 months. In addition, this project also simplifies the customer onboarding process which includes customer background checks, traditionally can be time consuming.

Q: Describe your team / department, and what makes it stand out from our competition?

People in my team all eager to design / develop greater products. Everyone is really driven and fully committed. We also know how to have a laugh and will never miss an opportunity to organise social events. I believe the willingness to constantly drive business excellence makes us stand out from the competition.

Q: Tell us some interesting facts about yourself.

  • Hobbies: Football – I never miss a chance to play or watch a game. Best experience was to watch Lionel Messi in Camp Nou Barcelona.
  • Achievement: I left home at 17 to move to a different continent alone to start my adult life. Being the only child and experiencing the world at that age, starting university, meeting new people, was a big achievement.
  • Very First Car: A ford fiesta, in red. Not as fast but holds a special place in my heart.

Q: What hints and tips can you share with the potential candidates who are going through the application / interview process?  Be confident in who you are. Don’t be shy to express yourself and your ideas. Be honest.

“We design, engineer, manufacture and market beautiful vehicles. With that comes a real sense of pride for the brand and what we do.”

Megan Howell joined Jaguar Land Rover in 2015 to study for a degree apprenticeship in Engineering. In 2021, Megan’s hard work, determination and commitment were acknowledged when she was awarded a First-Class Bachelor of Engineering degree with honours by the University of Warwick.

At the start of her professional career as a Cost Engineer and hot on the heels of a listing in the Autocar Great Women in the British car industry 2022 initiative, Megan tells us why Jaguar Land Rover is a great place to work for Black talent.

  1. Why Jaguar Land Rover for Black talent?

Now is a really exciting time for Black talent to join Jaguar Land Rover. The automotive industry is not traditionally known for its diversity; however, Jaguar Land Rover has committed to changing this narrative. Jaguar Land Rover is the first UK car manufacturer to sign the Business in the Community Race at Work Charter and has partnered with a number of other external diversity bodies – most recently BYP. Over the next five years, Jaguar Land Rover’s Diversity & Inclusion strategy, championed by our CEO Thierry Bollore, will see the company strive to shape “a culture in which every one of our employees can bring their authentic self to work and reach their full potential”. This will be bolstered by the implementation of progressive policies, benefits and support, along with employee engagement to accelerate progress.

All of these D&I initiatives paired with our global Reimagine strategy see Jaguar Land Rover entering an era of true internal and external transformation. There is a lot of change on the horizon and more opportunity than ever before. For Black talent wanting to be part of that evolution and passionate about becoming trailblazers for upcoming BYPs, I think it’s a great place to be right now.

2. What do you like about working here?

It’s great working on two internationally recognised brands that are pioneering modern luxury. We design, engineer, manufacture and market beautiful vehicles. With that comes a real sense of pride for the brand and what we do.

I like how multi-faceted the company is in terms of the job roles, working environments and experience available. Different functions attract and cultivate different skills, personality types and ideas. It’s great seeing the cross-functional collaboration that happens to deliver an amazing end product every time.  I really enjoy that in my job role, I interface with a lot of these functions.

3. How does the REACH (Race, Ethnicity & Cultural Heritage) network enhance life at Jaguar Land Rover?

The Jaguar Land Rover REACH employee network will be celebrating its 4th birthday this September. The network exists to champion employees from all races and ethnicities to be equally represented and celebrated across Jaguar Land Rover. Racial equality is also a high priority to Jaguar Land Rover senior leaders, with a clear target to increase ethnic representation by 15% across all levels of our business by 2026. Working closely with core stakeholders across the business, the REACH network will be instrumental in creating initiatives to help Jaguar Land Rover achieve this target.

As a member of the committee and Communications Lead, I love that I get to play such an active part in Jaguar Land Rover’s journey toward becoming a more inclusive business. It is a huge amount of work but super rewarding and looking after the comms, branding and marketing activities for the network allows me to use and develop skills in an area that I’m passionate about.

We run four core types of events – Lunch & Learns (to educate and open conversations), Roadshows (to build awareness of REACH and its fundamentals around the business), Mastermind Series (to provide networking and development) and Change Makers (to improve employee work experience). We have a Yammer page and curate a monthly newsletter along with holding events and celebrations for various cultural occasions throughout the year. We have an internal mentorship scheme and also partner with local educational bodies to encourage bringing diverse talent into the business, in addition to actively encouraging the progression of diverse talent.

The REACH network has enhanced my life at Jaguar Land Rover, and I’ve heard the same from many others. I only wish I had known about it when I first joined! However, this is a part of the work we are doing with our Roadshows and partnerships with Early Careers to raise awareness. The sense of unity and reward that comes from being a member of the committee, building it from the ground up and bringing people together is amazing. As a member of REACH, I get to expand my network and meet like-minded people from across the business who want to have a more meaningful experience at work. REACH makes work feel a bit more like home.

4. How does Jaguar Land Rover empower employees?

Where applicable, Jaguar Land Rover had maintained flexibility on hybrid working after the benefits seen on wellbeing when it started during the pandemic.

Our employee-led networks help foster our culture of empowerment. If you just want to clock in, do your hours, and clock out that’s fine – but if you want to push yourself to do more there are chances to get yourself more involved.

You can propose new ideas and ways of working and get a lot of support to implement them

‘Just over two and a half years ago I moved to Shannon from Krakow in Poland. Krakow is a huge and vibrant city but there is very little diversity there. I immediately experienced such a difference when I arrived in Ireland.

What I absolutely love, since starting with Jaguar Land Rover, is working with colleagues from different cultures and backgrounds – and the benefits and respect that brings to the working environment.

I have met colleagues and become friends with people from across the globe – from Turkey, Hungary, India, Vietnam and many more countries. I feel really settled here.

My role as Scrum Master means that I talk a lot to colleagues to ensure our work is represented and we are all on track with a project. The culture in the Shannon office is very agile and openminded. You can propose new ideas and ways of working and get a lot of support to implement them.

There is a lot of collaboration and co-operation within the business. At the moment I am working closely with a very experienced Agile Coach and, since she has taken me under her wing, I am learning so much. I am pretty new to the Scrum Master role and am growing personally at a really fast pace – that’s really down to the experience of the colleagues around me.’

Culture and Values, India, Responsible Business

CSR projects are the pivotal points around which the core Jaguar Land Rover values rotate

Can the progress of an individual happen without the collective advancement of the society? The answer to all these questions is “No”. In this era of cut-throat competition, excessive workloads and constant endeavour to complete daily targets, Jaguar Land Rover has not forgotten that there is a world around as well. Realizing that it has a social responsibility towards the underprivileged sections of the society and the environment where we reside, Jaguar Land Rover, through its various projects, is trying its best to promote environmental sustainability and community support.

If we have a cursory glance over the CSR policies of Jaguar Land Rover India, it can be stated that the corpus spent by the organisation on CSR activities annually, includes at least 2 percent of the average net profits made during the three immediately preceding financial years. Also, the periodic review and monitoring of CSR Policy implementation is in the hands of Governance structure. This structure comprises of Jaguar Land Rover India Board and CSR Board Committee. CSR projects are the pivotal points around which the core Jaguar Land Rover values like integrity, understanding, responsibility, unity and excellence rotate.

From crates to classrooms

The CSR Program is not restricted to any particular domain, instead it aims to contribute something in diverse spheres like Education, Health, Environment and Employability. “From Crates to Classrooms” is one of the brilliant examples of the projects undertaken by Jaguar Land Rover India, Pune. This project is a big justice to the goals of environmental sustainability and social support. Various parts of cars that arrive in wooden skids or pallets at the manufacturing centre are converted into the classroom desks by local carpenters.

Till now, several hundreds of desks have been manufactured and donated to approximately seven educational centers, in and around Pune. Young school children are also invited sometimes to have the manufacturing plant tour. This is yet again another attempt by the organization to ignite the potential inside these young minds and inspire them to achieve great things in life.

Making our ecosystem a bit greener

Jaguar Land Rover India has contributed hugely to making our ecosystem a bit greener. Close to 400 trees in Khadakwasla dam catchment area and around 200 trees in Baner, a suburb in Maharashtra have been planted. JLR has also actively participated in the “Khadakwasla dam cleaning project” initiated by NGO named Green Thumb. This project aimed to address the problem of silt accumulation in the dam due to soil erosion. Around 60 percent of the dam was filled with silt leading to reduced water storage capacity.

Sachin Bendre, HR Business partner of Jaguar Land Rover India Operations cites, “We have a plan to plant more than 1 lakh trees. Now people go to the dam on weekends as a nice picnic spot and plant trees there which is a great learning for the young generation.” He also strongly recommends, “we can launch a philanthropic initiative where every employee of Jaguar Land Rover can donate some amount to CSR fund on his/her birthday for planting trees, thereby adding some more oxygen to the environment.”

Improving local schools

The list doesn’t end here. Jaguar Land Rover India has identified 26 schools in Bhor district of Pune and built urinals and washrooms there with a promise from the schools’ administration that proper maintenance will be done from their end. Besides this, many schools have also been painted by our employees themselves.

Another stirring feat of Jaguar Land Rover India is the initiative of groundwater recharge in Pashan area in Baner. Wells used to run dry in the 70 feet high rock area as water percolation was a tough challenge here. Jaguar Land Rover India along with Municipal Corporation played a crucial role in building contours along the mountainous region and drilling multiple borewells. In a period of mere 5 months, natural filtration and refilling occurred, studding yet another bead in the success garland of Jaguar Land Rover India. Sachin Bendre states, “We can start an education program on rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge. More borewells can also be built.”

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give

The fact cannot be denied that CSR Activities have provided a golden opportunity to all the employees of Jaguar Land Rover India to contribute something towards the society, environment and country which gives a boost to their self-pride and satisfaction. It is a matter of honour for them to be a part of such organisation which has pledged to lift the downtrodden strata of the society. Jaguar Land Rover India has not undertaken CSR Activities just to gain publicity, instead it has accepted CSR as a business imperative wholeheartedly. Jaguar Land Rover not just preaches but takes efforts in the direction of actualising the visions of being a societal change.
