Jaguar Land Rover has already had a major impact on my career.

‘The idea that we are surrounded by large amounts of data that can be used to improve our decision making process in all business domains was very exciting- so I decided to pursue a career in Analytics.

Learning about Jaguar Land Rover’s Analytics team I was certain that this would be a place where I could learn from excellent individuals, get training and exposure to exciting projects.

When starting the graduate scheme, the initial training introduced me to the basics of data engineering, data science and data visualisation. Going into the first project I was able to put my learnings into practice: building data pipelines, creating visualisations, and presenting to senior stakeholders.

During my time at Jaguar Land Rover I have also been given the opportunity to support the initial start-up stages of the Data Office, creating content and resources for the enterprise roll out of Tableau. Being involved in such an impactful initiative at the early stages, has been a valuable experience. I am now starting my second rotation within the team, diving into the Data Engineering world.

In Jaguar Land Rover I feel that I am able to contribute and given the opportunity to express and implement my ideas, while learning from an awesome team!’

Delivering tangible and accessible solutions to a global customer base is extremely rewarding.

‘I’ve been extremely fortunate over the past 17½ years here to have experienced a wide variety of roles and responsibilities – this is one of the benefits of working in a large and diverse organisation as it affords you opportunities to learn a broad spectrum of skills which all shape you and your career.  We may not always know where our strengths lie until we are challenged in new ways – which means your career path can take unexpected turns as you, the business and the global environment evolve.  However, I have felt in control and supported in all my key career decisions to date through open discussions with line managers, mentors and colleagues.’

Certainly, going back to the start of my career I could never have foreseen where I am now – leading the Power Electronics team – responsible for traction inverters, control SW and DCDC converters on all our electrified vehicles.  As electrification is now at the heart of all our products going forwards, the team is growing, skills and experience to deliver world class products and support the migration to an electrified future.  Having started out visualising fuel injector spray patterns at Ford it’s a huge leap in a relatively short period of time!

As part of the electrified propulsion system team, we have a significant part to play in positively impacting society and the environment.  One of the main concerns as people migrate to electric propulsion is “range anxiety” – not having enough energy to complete a journey.  Our part in this is to produce the most efficient power conversion systems available so that as much of the stored battery energy is converted to forward propulsion as possible and we make our vehicles go even further on a single charge.  This includes adaptive software strategies, the latest power electronics technologies, and the most efficient packaging solutions to produce the optimum drive system.

First and foremost, work must excite you – and delivering tangible and accessible solutions to a global customer base is extremely rewarding.  The challenges we face are always changing so you are always learning – not just about the subjects you are working on, but also with the approaches taken to resolve the issues and deliver the solutions.  Above all else though, it’s working with new talent coming into the department/company and seeing them grow and develop.  While I still get a feeling of immense pride seeing our products driving around – especially the ones I’ve played a key part in delivering – what really matters is helping to shape the careers of those around me and seeing them progress in the company.’

There is an amazing chemistry in the team here. Whatever level you are at – everyone has their say.

‘When I joined the team here it felt like I was joining an exciting start up within the tech industry and my journey so far has not disappointed. The company gives you real autonomy to come up with your own ideas. We have a Customer First Approach – we want to do what’s right for them so we get the opportunity to share ideas and make technical decisions that will move the business forward and build quality software for our customers. Its agile transformation in action.

We have a huge array of talent in the team, and this allows us to tap into everyone’s experience, explore ideas and bring them to life.

Lockdown hasn’t had any impact on our collaboration and work. We have all had daily contact and the business encourages Pair Programming so that no one is working in silo. Being relatively new and joining in the middle of the pandemic, this has really helped me. With the support of colleagues, I was able to familiarise myself with systems immediately and was writing code on my second day.

Everyone in the company made me feel really welcome, having conversations with our chief engineer, head of software development and my line manager within my first week enabled me to fully understand the vision of Jaguar Land Rover Manchester and allowed me to provide ideas and support to help achieve this and raise any queries or concerns I had. This is an ongoing process which happens regularly, the senior leaders are extremely supportive and are always looking at better ways of working – so ideas for improvement are listened to and taken on board.

There is an amazing chemistry in the team here. Whatever level you are at – everyone has their say.’

Pride was the first of our many networks to be set up within the business and getting involved in it has made me hugely passionate about my role in D & I.

.

‘Our Network was set up as an informal group in 2017. I was originally involved in setting it up. It’s something I am extremely passionate about and felt it was something that the business was missing, and colleagues could benefit from.

When we started the group, we attended Student Pride and, in talking to other companies there, it became clear that as a business it would be something we could really make a difference in.

We soon formed a committee and had a launch event where over 150 colleagues attended. Over the years we have developed a Network that is made by employees for employees. We attend and support Birmingham Pride and celebrate important dates such as National Coming Out Day. The network has become an integral part of the business which is a real testimony to its importance. We are also Stonewall Diversity Members which has allowed us as a business, to become more inclusive for LGBTQ+ colleagues.

Pride was really the first of our many networks to be set up within the business and getting involved in it has made me hugely passionate about my role in D & I. All our networks help colleagues meet other people in the business that you otherwise may not get the opportunity to meet.

There are some super passionate people involved across the business and it’s amazing what you can achieve with a small group of likeminded colleagues.

Working from home during lockdown has had its challenges but we have kept our networks together with virtual events such as Lunch & Learns – which are open to the whole business, and we encourage Allyship so that anyone can join any network and find out more.’

Introducing our new employee network – Care for Carers

‘Any employee who is a carer – whether paid or unpaid – can join the network. Our vision for the Care for Carers Network is to provide a network of support, advice and information to and for Carers. CfC will work to enable Carers to have an outlet to obtain guidance and enable them to value their own feelings and needs as well as the feelings and needs of the person they care for.

Many people are unaware of what support is out there for carers. This network signposts them not only to the internal support process but also what external help there is such as Carers UK. The end goal is to get Jaguar Land Rover involved with the Carers Rights Day which is held every year across the UK and hold events where carers from across the business can come together and discuss the challenges they have faced and how they have overcome them.

I am an unpaid Carer for my husband. The business has really supported me – with my manager and senior manager being flexible, allowing me to work from home but also giving me a listening ear when I was at work.’
